Torafu Architects designs a Freitag store that resembles a kiosk

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Freitag chose the studio Torafu Architects to design its new store in Osaka, Japan. In a unique style reminiscent of a kiosk, the Freitag store combines an industrial look with coloured accents thanks to the many bags on display. Freitag, which manufactures practical bags made from recycled materials such as old lorry tarpaulins, bicycle inner tubes or seat belts, has acquired a space that reflects its image, right at the heart of Japan.

A kiosk-style shop

Taking its inspiration from newspaper kiosks, which are able to display a maximum number of magazines in a minimum amount of space, Torafu Architects made the most of the rather limited 65-square-metre space. The walls are therefore strewn with a host of drawers that store no fewer than 1,200 unique bags.

A solid wooden U-shaped counter is found in the centre, which serves as a cash desk and display unit. Last but not least, a tarpaulin is hung above this counter, designed in the same materials as the bags, which is raised when the store opens and lowered when it closes. This deliberately old-fashioned system is also subtly reminiscent of kiosk awnings.

An industrial style

To highlight the diversity of the bag offering, Torafu Architects has chosen a relatively streamlined design in an industrial style for the new Freitag retail outlet.

Between hanging neon lights, a concrete floor, raw wood furniture, exposed pipes and white walls, the store is inspired by factory atmospheres with an ultra-modern vibe. The decor’s neutral tones contrast with the multitude of colours of the bags that are showcased.
