NY Fashion Week: Promostyl’s seven favourites
New York Fashion Week finished on 11 September. While designers presented ever more creative collections, Promostyl spotted seven designers who stood out during this unmissable fashion event.
Rosie Assoulin
Winner of the 2015 CFDA Swarovski Award, Rosie Assoulin presented a sunny collection bathed in radiant tones. She boldly teamed tangy stripes and Prince of Wales checks, cantaloupe orange and naive embroidery, tie dye prints and lurex fabric. True to herself, the designer combined a sophisticated look with touches of nonchalance: a distinctive signature that Rosie Assoulin brilliantly masters.
Sies Marjan
Sander Lak set off in search of « pure, genuine beauty » for his summer 2020 collection. The looks were sent down the runway in a majestic setting – some accessorised with crocodile boots – crafted in tones each more dazzling than the last. Between voluptuous dresses and ultra-stiff trench coats, the Dutch designer played with materials and proposed exclusive textures, as seen in the Duchesse satins decorated with embossed croc scales and silks printed with snakeskin-effect motifs.
Gabriela Hearst
Since 2015, Gabriela Hearst has been designing collections inspired by her childhood spent on a ranch in Uruguay and her current life in New York. Featuring refined slip dresses, macramé dresses and structured blazers, Gabriela Hearst’s style is simple yet feminine and subtle. The designer is committed to an eco-friendly approach and pays particular attention to the details and lines of the clothing, tailored to perfection.
Maryam Nassir Zadeh
The designer of Iranian descent presented her new collection devoted to a colourful summer. Between punchy tones and neon shades, Maryam Nassir Zadeh designed bright pieces to wear for nights at the beach and championed the swimsuit as a garment in its own right. Featuring bright pink bikinis, knit sports bras, mini skirts, cargo pants, etc., the looks’ casual style was given a twist with lace tights, adding an elegant, decorative touch to the designer’s avant-garde designs.
Phillip Lim
For his summer 2020 collection, Phillip Lim offered a chic and urban wardrobe. With airy dresses, workwear jumpsuits and ultra-flowing trench coats, the collection seemed to defy the laws of gravity. While the volumes took a streamlined approach, they were nonetheless enriched with remarkable details: perforated leather, delicate cut-outs, sheer detailing, etc. Under postcard-style prints, the designer revealed a contemporary vision of elegantly practical NY fashion.
Proenza Schouler
The duo of Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez revisited the eighties in the most couture way possible. Influenced by today’s working women and those of the eighties, including their own mothers, the two designers imagined the career girl of tomorrow. The shoulders were square, the waists high and nipped in. Feminine curves with highlighted with balanced finesse. Indisputably, one of the key pieces in the collection was the silk jersey dress draped from top to bottom in the style of Madame Grès.

Since Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen created their brand in 2006, they haven’t stopped revisiting effortless chic in pure form. There is no embellishment or redundant fabric: the pieces are structured and the cuts impeccable. The designers discreetly upgrade their clothes with details and beautiful finishes. Attached to neutral shades, the latest collection from the twin sisters was no exception to the rule: with black, white, cream, beige, etc., the colour palette was soft, illuminated with a delicate azure blue. Simple yet pragmatic is the Olsen sisters’ fashion philosophy.
